Brownlee Feild Jan. 26 ~ Nov. 1, 2012October 30, 2012, 9:00 am by Staff Reports
Feild was an avid baseball fan and the highlight in his younger days was when he signed a contract with the St. Louise Cardinals to attend spring training in 1937. Unfortunately, his baseball career was short lived though he continued to idolize Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle and hank Aaron. In 1938, Feild married an old school mate, Merle Farquhar and they had a son, Jack and a daughter, Jan in 1941. Feild and Merle started a registered Turkey operation. They had their own incubators and 10,000 egg capacity and latest in brooding equipment. They sold locally and shipped turkey breeding stock eggs and pouts over a good portion of the United States. In 1956, Feild was appointed Burnet County Tax Assessor-Collector to an unexpired term of office. After this, he ran for the office of 4 four terms and then retired undefeated. During his tenure in office, he and his highly capable group of deputies prided themselves in being first, or near the first county in the state to present their annual tax roll to the State Comptroller for his approval. He was a member of the Texas Collector-Assessors Association, and along the way he served about seven years on the Burnet ISD school board. In 1963, he and Merle established a registered herd of Hereford cattle, which Jack still maintains. He was a lover of good music in the big band days. Some of his favorites included Guy Lombardo, Wayne King, Tommie Dorsey, Bennie Goodman and Lawrence Welk. He attended a dance in the mid-30’s here in Burnet at Mr. Cole’s Old Opera House where Lawrence Welk and his boys furnished the music. He is survivored by son Jack and wife Vivian Field of Burnet; daughter Jan and husband Ron Whisenant of Burnet; grandchildren Mort and Barbara Feild Smith, Jack Jr. and Verna Field, and Ricky Feild all of Katy; great-grandchildren Curtis Smith, Dwain Sutton, Callie Smith, Ashley Feild, Cassidy Feild, Justin Field and Jace Field also of Katy. Those serving as pallbearers will be Jack Feild, Ricky Feild, Mort Smith, Andy Feild Brownlee Bowmer and Marion Ferguson. Honorary pallbearers are, Richard Sanders, Emmitt Jackson, Larry Hodge, Waite Hoyt Adams, Nolan Warner, Carroll Buck and Jim Cummings. Visitation will be on Tuesday evening Nov. 13, at Edgar Funeral Home in Burnet. Services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 10:30 a.m., with Darrell Debo and Barry Drake officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Friends can express their condolences to the family at edgarfh.com. |
