Granite Shoals Quarry Park wins $100,000 grant award

January 24, 2013, 9:00 pm by Glynis Crawford Smith

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission on Thursday morning approved $1.3 million in competitive grants for city and county parks across the state, including $100,000 to develop Granite Shoals Quarry Park on Phillips Ranch Road, just south of RM 1431.

Money for 10 Outdoor Recreation Grants and 2 Urban Outdoor Recreation Grants comes from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) program funding appropriated annually by Congress and passed on through Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Grant Development Services prepared the application for the Granite Shoals project, which was among 35 funding requests scored for the TPWD. The proposal includes trails, a tennis pavilion, wildflower gardens and an interpretive display.

The Granite Shoals City Council, at its Tuesday night meeting, voted unanimously to adopt names for City parks, including the name Granite Shoals Quarry Park for the proposed park at the municipal complex even though the land awaited funding approval to be officially designated.
