MFHS conducts lockdown drillFebruary 07, 2013, 9:00 pm by Adam Troxtell
Marble Falls High School practiced a lockdown drill about 9 a.m. Thursday as part of the school district’s effort to review campus security. The entire campus was locked down for about 6-10 minutes, with no one able to get on or off the school grounds as campus safety officials walked through the building to make sure the campus was secure and to ensure everyone was doing their part. "Today’s drill went well, because we had faculty, staff and students do everything they were supposed to in that situation,” Allen Roberts, assistant superintendant of operations, said. "Throughout the process, we always find little things that we can do better on and things that we have done very well on.” A lockdown is a common practice used by school districts to keep students and teachers safe in their classrooms in the event of an intruder. Drills also allow campus and city safety officials to practice their roles, and Roberts said such a drill (called a security audit) will be done in the future. Reader CommentsThat is great but what can be done to prevent the need for a lock down. The campus like so many others are not secured. Why cant the school boards go ahead and admit that there is no way to gaurentee complete safety of my children except to make the campuses like a prison, one way in and one way out. You are correct...unless we make the schools like prisons and search and pat down every person who enters every day and then again throughout the day there is no way to guarantee a bad person with a weapon won't get in. In a free society you prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Drills are the best way to do this but if someone wants in bad enough we all know what can happen. One way in and one out would be great until there was a fire or all 1000 HS students tried to leave through one door at the same time. |
