US 281 bridge issues fix will be ‘later’

Texas Department of Transportation officials say concerns
about the "bumpy” new northbound US 281 bridge will be addressed, but not
before the new southbound bridge span is complete.
|Some motorists find the bridge bumpy; others not so much.
Bob Sewell, a Marble Falls businessman who drives over the
bridge about 10 times a week, said that although he’s sure that the design of
the bridge is sound, he still has curiosities about issues like the un-level
pavement of the span and the drainage.
"Why does a new, modern bridge feel like a rollercoaster?”
Sewell asked. "Is it going to collect water in spots? How will water drain all
the way to the little bitty drains at the end?”
Sewell said that despite all the uncertainties, he’s glad
Marble Falls has the new bridge.
"They (TxDOTconstruction contractors) said they did it
right. I hope…,” he said.
For what TxDOT says, see Friday's Highlander.
I agree with Mr Sewell; there are unanswered questions about the new bridge. I am no structural expert but something just does not seem right with this bridge compared to many other new bridge in the area. It seems to be sagging at the south approach end, suggesting the piers are not at the correct height. The pavement is unusually uneven which may trap water during a heavy rainstorm.. Compared with many other bridges I have used when traveling from coast to coast, something about this bridge suggests a fault in engineering and construction.
