Domestic Violence Awareness Month centers attention on local crisis shelter

With the arrival of October and Domestic Violence Awareness Month, an area shelter is receiving much needed attention from the public.


The center has three upcoming events taking place in the Highland Lakes area. On Wednesday, Oct. 17 the center will be holding a presentation on they myths and dynamics of domestic violence awareness and prevention the Kingsland Library at 2 p.m. On Thursday, Oct. 25, the Highland Lakes Family Crisis Center will host a Domestic Violence Candlelight Vigil in Johnson Park from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30p.m. The event is free, and the community is welcome to come honor the survivors and remember those who fell victim to abuse.


The center will also host its 29th Annual Golf Tournament Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Delaware Springs Golf Course in Burnet. The entry fee will be $65 per person. For more information, visit www.hlfcc.org/Golf.


"The more we are out there doing these events, the more people know that we are here,” said Debra Stewart, volunteer coordinator for the center.
