HSB woman organizes estate planning seminar

December 19, 2012, 10:00 am by Alexandria Randolph

A seminar on women's estate planning will take place on Saturday, Jan. 5 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the River City Grille's Colorado Room.
The seminar features a panel of volunteers from the Highland Lakes area including attorneys Casey Burns, Robert Glanville, Neal Kennedy, Rob Robertson, certified public accountants Burl Harper and Nathan Robnett, certified financial planner Mitch Rivers, and ministers Pete Christy and Jon Weems.
The educative session will focus on helping women to understand their financial future and to preserve their independence in later years. The session is pro-bono- there will be no sales pitches and no products, just volunteered information.
The seminar is timely due to the "fiscal cliff" occurring on Jan. 3 when the Budget Control Act of 2011 expires, ending Bush tax cuts and planned spending cuts.
"Unless congress steps in, a lot of our estate laws will change," said Event Coordinator Peyton Wolcott. Wolcott, a Horseshoe Bay resident, said that the seminar will teach women to protect themselves from "life's last gotcha."
"Historically widows and babies are the most vulnerable citizens," Wolcott said. "Dealing with my own experiences I learned how quick society is to marginalize the elderly-especially widows."
Wolcott said that the seminar is mainly for women. Although men are allowed to attend, only women are permitted to ask questions in order to maintain female participation. Some of the common questions the  seminar will address are regarding trusts, probates, maintaining testamentary capacities, recognizing elder abuse and how to know who can be trusted with important information and money.
