Water issues dire in some communities

The multitude of water issues facing Highland Lakes citizens, businesses and government entities was on full display Wednesday at a water issues meeting that drew a packed crowd to the Burnet County courthouse.

Central Texas Water Coalition President Jo Karr Tedder did not bring up her group’s suggestion this week that the LCRA or some other entity consider purchasing land from the rice farmers and using it to grow less water-intensive crops.

CTWC’s proposal, which Tedder said has drawn interest from legislators and other water officials who have been briefed on it, was not enthusiastically received at the Burnet County Commissioners Court meeting Tuesday.

Burnet County Judge Donna Klaeger and Commissioners Bill Neve and Ronny Hibler said they didn’t like the idea, objecting to the possibility of the LCRA paying out any more money to the rice farmers, who they feel already gets undeserved favorable treatment from the authority.
