First responders from around the area will gather at Lakeside Parkin Marble Falls on Sept. 11 to participate in a Rotary Club 9-11 Service at noon.
Community members are invited to attend the service, which will include an invocation by Pastor Rodney McGee, presentation of the colors by Marble Falls VFW, a proclamation made by Marble Falls Mayor George Russell, and awards to exemplary servicemen by Larry Sherwood and Jim Gallagher.
"They recognize officers every year,” said Marble Falls Capt. Steve Eckstein. "They pick outstanding officers and present them with plaques. They take nominations from every agency.”
Eckstein said that the Rotary Club holds the event every year, and that Marble Falls Police are typically present.
"It seems like (9-11) is not remembered as well. The wounds are healing. It’s good to go once a year so that we don’t forget. Every year we forget more and more, which is unfortunate,” Eckstein said.
Falls Police will be one
of several agencies to be present. Marble
Falls Fire Chief Johnny
Caraway said that others will come from Marble Falls Fire Rescue, Horseshoe Bay
Fire Rescue, Marble Falls EMS, Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department and
Granite Shoals Fire Rescue.
Caraway said remembrance is not just for first responders.
"We too remember that it scarred our country; killed mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers. (We remember) the impact to the families of the first responders. It impacted so many more lives than just those 343,” he said. "Often times our ceremonies are just about fire and police, but really the impact was to the families and civilians. The impact to our country is something to remember, too.”
During the service, the National Anthem will be performed by Dave Sweigart and taps will be performed by Joe Mantheiy.
