Marble Falls loses 56-14 in finale

LEANDER – Marble Falls closed its season Friday night with a 56-14 loss to the playoff-bound Leander Lions at Bible Stadium.

Marble Falls made plenty of mistakes, including some new ones in dropping the final game of a season that started with a lot of emotion and expectations.

The Mustangs ran up 205 yards of offense on the night while Leander’s stout defense came up with enough big plays to salt away the game.

Marble Falls did score 14 points, matching the most against Leander all season.

The 9-1 Lions led 7-0 after one quarter, but erupted in the second quarter with a lot of help from the Mustangs.

Leander scored 21 points in both the second and third quarters to take command.

The Lions first scoring drive took just two plays to cover 12 yards after a sack of quarterback Mike Richardson and a fumble.

Richardson finished the game engineering two scoring drives of 72 yards and 87 yards.

Richardson was 16 of 27 for 132 yards passing against one of the toughest defenses in Central Texas.

Keith Jerome scored both of the Mustangs touchdowns. The junior scored the first touchdown for the Mustangs on a 62-yard run down the right sideline in the third quarter. The Mustangs took just three plays to cover 72 yards after Leander had opened the second half with a quick score.

Marble Falls trailed 35-7 with 10:25 left in the third quarter after Jerome’s nice run down the sideline.

Jerome scored on an 18-yard screen pass with 7:44 left in the game to cut the deficit to 49-14. Marble Falls caught Leander in an all-out blitz on the play and Richardson was able to get the football off to Jerome, who timed out his catch and ran well. He slithered through the defense, cutting his way across the grain for the score.

Marble Falls fell to 4-6 overall and 1-5 in district. The record matches last year’s totals, but this year’s team made some strides in competing.
