Itís not good when the last line of defense is making all the tackles.
Last week, rover David Spurlock finished with 15 tackles to lead the Marble Falls defense. The teamís three starting linebackers combined for 14 tackles.
Itís not the way it was drawn up to work.
This week, the Mustangs will get a chance to redeem themselves when they take on the Smithville Tigers at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mustang Stadium.
The Tigers feature a 6-2, 212-pound quarterback with 4.5 speed and big play potential. Heís name is Khalil McCathern and he wears No. 10. Most people that have seen him play consider him a 10 on a scale of one to 10.
"Heís one of those competitive leaders,íí Smithville coach Wayne Childs said. "We go as he goes. He runs the show on both sides of the ball.í
McCathern was a first-team all-district safety last year and averaged 10 tackles a game for the Tigers, who went 5-5 overall and 2-3 in tough District 26-3A. McCarthern is ball hawk and had two interceptions in one of the Tigersí scrimmages.
The three district losses last year were by two to Yoakum, by one to La Grange and by 17 to Cuero.
The Tigers graduated a lot of key players and this time around Marble Falls will need an emotional lift to get things going after a disappointing opening 49-23 loss to La Grange on the road.
Smithville has the same thoughts of rebounding after their game went south in the second half against Lampasas last week. That game was 14-0 at halftime when Lampasas returned the second half kickoff for a score. Smithville rebounded with a touchdown to cut the lead to 20-6, but Lampasas Steven Jazsyk answered with a 57-yard touchdown run.
Smithville finished with 300 yards rushing and McCathern was effective with 16 carries for 176 yards and the only touchdown for the Tigers. Please read Friday's Highlander sports for complete details
