Marble Falls rolls in 69-25 win

Marble Falls opened its home schedule Friday night with a resounding 69-25 victory over the Smithville Tigers at Mustang Stadium.
Senior running back Keith Jerome scored five touchdowns and rushed for 174 yards on 19 carries to lead the outburst.
The two teams combined for 53 points in the second quarter with Marble Falls building a 48-18 edge at halftime.
Marble Falls (1-1) will play rival Burnet (2-0, with a 20-9 win over Rockdale) next week on the road.
Quarterback Brennan Wooten completed 20 of 26 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns, including two to Garrett Gray for 48 and 20 yards in the big second quarter.
Marble Falls scored on four straight possessions in a span of six minutes in the second quarter to break the game open.
First the Mustangs rolled 47 yards in six plays with Jerome scoring on a 22-yard run on a third-and-one play before Wooten put plenty of air on a pass to Gray streaking down the right sideline to cap a quick-strike. three-play, 59-yard possession.
Marble Falls defense forced a three-and-out against Smithville on the Tigers next possession and forced a punt.
Zuri Buchanan had a nice return to the Smithville 40. Marble Falls needed just five plays to cover the distance including a 20-yard run by Jerome on first down and a big first down by Wooten on a pass to J.T. Watson on third-and-10 from the 19. Jerome scored from one yard out behind the Mustangs offense line.
Jeff Ramey recovered a fumble on Smithville’s next try against the Mustangs defense to set up a 20-yard strike to Gray for a 34-6 lead with 5:03 left in the second quarter.
Smithville (0-2) stuck with its talented quarterback Khalil McCathern on the read option for most of the night and the senior managed to rush for 171 yards on 19 carries. He scored two touchdowns rushing and two passing. When he hit, they were big plays. He had a 73-yard pass to Cearan Adkins and he also pulled off a 68-yard run in the second half for a score.
For the game, the Mustangs outgained the Tigers, 521-362, in total yards.
Marble Falls backup quarterback Jacob Smith also played the entire fourth quarter and spent most of it handing the ball to Tyler Ryan. Ryan finished off a solid outing with 13 carries for 71 yards. Smith hit Watson on a 7-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter with 5:27 left.
Marcus Marichalar came in to handle the kicking chores for the Mustangs midway in the second quarter and kicked seven extra points.
The 69 points is the most for the Mustangs in Todd Dodge’s 12 games as head coach. The previous high was 62 against Boerne Champion last year.
