Leander stops Lady Mustangs

Marble Falls tried to push the tempo against Leander in Friday’s District 25-4A opener. It backfired.
The Lady Mustangs committed 11 first quarter turnovers and dug themselves a hole against the speedy Leander Lady Lions.
Leander’s early cushion helped the Lady Lions hold off the Lady Mustangs and the visitors took a 40-36 district win at Max Copeland Gym.
Both teams were sub par from the free throw line, but the Lady Lions picked up five points on the Lady Mustangs at the line.
"We have to hit our free throw and not turn the ball over,’’ Marble Falls coach Chris Jost said. "The turnovers put us in a hole and we miss six of nine free throws the first half. We battled them tooth and nail after that.’’
The frenzied pace of the first half helped the Lady Lions. Leander (13-7 and 1-0).
Marble Falls was solid out of the gate with Haley Stephens scoring on a break and Sarah Stripling scoring on 3-pointer from deep in the left corner for a nearly 6-2 advantage. Midway through the quarter, Leander took advantage of a rash of turnovers and the quickness of Alisha Greene. Greene scored eight of her game-high 21 points in the first quarter, capitalizing on drives the lane.
Leander took a 16-8 lead after the first quarter.
Stripling held the team in the game with five first quarter points.
Marble Falls sophomore post Reann Hall had one of her best games with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Hall worked the low post well, scoring five points in the second quarter and then adding 10 more in the second half.
"They kept playing behind her and we were able to get her the ball,’’ Jost said.
Marble Falls battled back in the fourth quarter to challenge at the end of he game.
With 2:18 left in the game, Leander led, 37-30.
Marble Falls outscored the Lady Lions, 6-3, over the final two minutes.
Stephens hit a follow shot with 1:09 left and Reann Hall worked inside for another shot with 21 seconds remaining. Hall’s banker cut he lead to 37-34.
Greene hit three of four free throws in the final 16 seconds before Reann Hall added two free throws with 21 seconds left for the final count.
The Lady Mustangs fell to 9-7 overall and 0-2 in district. The Lady Lions are 13-7 after taking the district opener for the Lady Lions.
