Marble Falls created some upbeat tempo and used early momentum to take a 58-45 win over the Vandegrift Lady Vipers Tuesday for the team’s first win in District 25-4A play.
Marble Falls kept its offense simple and utilized a steady diet of getting the ball inside to Reann Hall to help the team establish itself in the home game.
Marble Falls improved to 13-11 overall and 1-4 in district while Vandegrift fell to 9-14 and 1-4.
Hall finished with 18 points and seven rebounds and season-scoring leader Sarah Stripling was also solid with 27 points.
"We wanted to try to create the tempo,’’ Marble Falls coach Chris Jost said. "We got off to a good start and got into the flow better.’’
The team had some good passing and got the ball inside consistently to Hall.
Hall, a sophomore, made her first three shots of the game all inside. Three minutes into the game, Marble Falls was up 8-0 and Hall had six points. She scored the game’s first points and then had steal for two and another inside shot off a steal by Stripling.
Vandegrift (9-14, 1-4) was able to rally and trailed by six after the first quarter.
Stripling had buzzer beaters at both the end of first and third quarters.
At halftime, Marble Falls led 27-18. The team was able to maintain double digits leads for most of the second half. The closest the Vipers would cut the lead was to nine (49-40) with less than four minutes left.
Stripling finished hitting 10 of 20 shots from the floor and was six of eight on free throws.
Hall was eight of 12 shooting and added two of six free throws. Hall also had seven rebounds leading the team to a 27-22 edge.
The Lady Mustangs hit 45 percent for the game on 21 of 47 shots. Vandegrift hit 42 percent on 18 of 43 shots. The Vipers were eight of 11 shooting free throws.
Marble Falls finished with just four players scoring. Haley Stephens added nine points on three of six shooting and Blanca Fonseca added four points, all on free throws.
"It was nice to get the win,’’ Jost said. "We had consistent effort and it was good to get the crowd into it.’’
The Marble Falls JV won, 32-18 and the freshmen lost, 30-16.
