Marble Falls girls basketball team played tenacious defense and notched a 54-29 victory over the Dripping Springs Lady Tigers Tuesday night.
"It was the best district game we’ve played in two years,’’ Marble Falls coach Chris Jost said of the team’s second district win this season, giving the Lady Mustangs two wins in their last three outings.
Marble Falls (14-12, 2-5) took control with its defense, holding Dripping Springs scoreless over a seven-minute stretch to take a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Marble Falls also had another seven minute-stretch of scoreless defense in the third quarter.
The Lady Mustangs had balanced scoring, won the rebound battle and were solid at the free throw line.
Dripping Springs (1-6) had beaten the Lady Mustangs 58-48 in the District 25-4A opener back on Dec. 10.
This time the Lady Mustangs mixed in some man defense and utilized the press better than the previous meeting.
"Last time they kind of picked us apart when we pressed,’’ Jost said. ‘We didn’t want to let that happen again.’’
Sarah Stripling scored 24 points on seven of 15 shooting and guard Blanca Fonseca scored 12 on five of eight shooting.
Stripling added six rebounds and four steals while Fonseca grabbed five rebounds, dished out five assists and stole the ball four times.
Teagan Hall scored two points and had a team-high six rebounds and seven assists to go with three steals.
Reann Hall scored six points on two of four shooting. Haley Stephens added four points and five rebounds.
Marble Falls shot 42 percent for the game on 18 of 41 shots. Dripping Springs managed just 30 shots for the game. Marble Falls was 16 of 20 from the free throw line.
"We held them to one shot a lot,’’ Jost said.
Marble Falls led 26-16 at halftime and 32-18 entering the fourth quarter.
"This win gives us a lot of confidence,’’ Jost said. "We had a lot of energy.’’
The Lady Mustangs will carry the momentum into Friday’s clash at Leander, which beat Marble Falls 40-36 in the previous meeting Dec. 13 at Marble Falls.
