The Marble Falls softball team will hold its first scrimmage Thursday against Lampasas at Marble Falls.
First-year coach Chelsey Heller said she had opened up every position and expects wide-open battles throughout the team.
"We’re not set on the varsity and junior varsity, yet,’’ said Heller, who has had the softball candidates for a week and a half of practices.
The recent inclement weather has played havoc with outside workouts.
Heller said she likes having depth at pitching with Amanda Thomas and Makenzie Carpenter returning. Heller said their will be 28 girls trying out for the varsity. The ones that don’t make varsity will be on the JV.
The Lady Mustangs won bi-district last year and we eliminated in the second round by Lockhart.
Thomas and Tyler Oppenheim are the top returners for the Lady Mustangs. Oppenheim is the returner at shortstop while Thomas can play first, catch or pitch. Oppenheim and Thomas are both already signed with colleges, prior to their senior seasons for the Lady Mustangs.
Marble Falls will have four scrimmages. The catch Burnet Feb. 4, then go to Liberty Hill Feb. 7 and return home for the final scrimmage against Georgetown Eastview Feb. 11.
The regular season opener is in the six-team Liberty Hill Tournament Feb. 13.
Marble Falls will compete in three tournaments this season, including Liberty Hill (Feb. 13-15), LaGrange (Feb. 22-22) and College Station (Feb. 27-March 1).
