Smithville is senior-laden team

September 04, 2012, 10:00 am by Mark Goodson

The Smithville Tigers are a senior-dominated team with some excellent skill position players.

The Tigers, who reside in District 26-3A with La Grange, won their season opener over Lampasas, 14-7.

Smithville takes on Marble Falls this week in Smithville. It will be an hour-plus road trip for the Mustangs down TX 71 east of Austin.

Smithville built a 14-0 lead and held off Lampasas, which was a playoff team a year ago in the Liberty Hill/Llano/Burnet district.

The big play of last week for the Tigers was a 94-yard fumble return by Gray Morris of the Tigers. He scooped the ball and raced for the score in the first half.

Morris is one of three backs that Smithville rotates into its backfield. Morris is the speedster. DaAron Jackson is the big, powerful back.

The Tigers utilize the pistol formation, where the quarterback is in the shotgun deep snap position and the running back behind him.

Smithville’s top defenders in their 4-3 scheme are middle linebacker Bryce Helmcamp, outside linebacker Jackson  and tackle Kegan Bledsoe.

The Tigers top offensive lineman is right guard Tommy McDonald.

Denton Cooper is the team’s starting quarterback.
