Marble Falls quarterback Mike Richardson is the state record holder for passing yardage after a brilliant performance Thursday night in Boerne.

The senior quarterback had a big grin on his face afterwards and was more than happy to credit his teammates for setting the standard for passing yards in a Texas high school football game.

Richardson threw the football 45 times, completing 35 for 724 yards and seven touchdowns. Marble Falls needed all of the completes in a 62-55 win over Boerne Champion on the road in a head-to-head battle with record-setting Charger quarterback Kyle Poeske, who had 595 yards Thursday night, bettering his career best set just three weeks ago in the season opener with New Braunfels.

Poeske was 36 of 60 passing against the Mustangs.

The national single game passing record is 764 yards.

"I was just trying to win the game,'' Richardson said after boosting his season totals to 103 of 152 for 1,483 yards with 20 touchdowns and just one interception. That's just in four games.

He hit 6-foot-5 junior Garrett Gray 13 times for 293 of the yards Thursday night. Gray caught five of the touchdowns on receptions of 9, 36, 60, 58 and 73 yards. Gray, who had 15 catches and two touchdowns last week in a 51-34 win over rival Burnet, went deep all night against Boerne Champion.

Carson Bowen had nine catches for 208 yards and scores of 42 and 27 yards. Ishiah Carson had six catches for 123 yards, Aidin Parnell five for 58 and Keith Jerome two for 42.

The two teams combined for 117 points, 1,507 yards and two punts.

Marble Falls put the game away with a 10-play, 70-yard drive in the final two minutes. The Mustangs converted three third down plays and Richardson scored the final points on a 3-yard run.

The offensive line of Rey Baltazar, Travis Sparks, Chandler Mabray, Saul Guzman and Rex Printz did not allow a sack.

Marble Falls is 3-1 on the season and Boerne Champion falls to 2-1.

The Mustangs have next week off and will open District 25-4A on Friday Oct. 5 against state-ranked Cedar Park at Marble Falls.
