Family move pays off as son sets state passing record

The Richardson family had a plan to give their three sons a chance to succeed on the football field.

Mark it up as a success. The plan is working for Paul and Tawny Richardson, the proud parents of the new Texas high school record holder for single-game passing yardage.

"It’s been an endeavor that the whole family has been involved in,’’ said Tawny Richardson. "Everybody is into it.’’

On Thursday night, son Mike Richardson passed his way into the record book by throwing the football 45 times, completing 35 for 724 yards.

The seven touchdowns were all needed for Marble Falls Mustangs to earn a 62-55 victory over previously unbeaten Boerne Champion.

"We knew he had a bunch of yards because of the big plays, but we really had no clue that he was that close to breaking the record,’’ said Marble Falls offensive coordinator Bill Poe, who has been involved with the spread offense since he was a ballboy back at McKinney High School in the late 1980s.

Mike Richardson’s family came to Texas from California when Mike was in the fifth grade, at least partially because Paul Richardson wanted his boys to experience football at its best.

"That’s what we live for, my boys,’’ said Paul Richardson. "It’s football and hay. Tawny is the one that keeps us all together.’’
