Flames win third in a row

Faith Academy backs Jason Byrd and Austin Ellis combined for 188 yards rushing and Byrd rushed and passed for touchdowns to lead the Flames to a 28-20 win over St. Mary’s Hall of San Antonio Friday in San Antonio.

Wingback Brian Freeman scored twice on runs of 11 and 57 yards in the team’s third straight victory of the season. Jacob Metcalf led the Flame defense with three interceptions.

Byrd opened the scoring with a 39-yard pass to Seth McAnally with 4:16 left in the first quarter. The scoring drive took three plays to cover 57 yards.

Freeman scored both of his touchdowns in the second quarter. His 11-yard run capped a nine-play 65-yard drive, using up three minutes and 59 seconds of clock. After a failed two-point run, the Flames led 14-8. His second touchdown run pushed the score to 20-14 with 7:21 left in the second quarter.

A snap over the St. Mary’s Hall punter’s head led to a safety for Faith Academy just before halftime.

In the third quarter, Byrd raced 52 yards for a touchdown to push the score to 28-14.

St. Mary’s Hall cut the lead to 28-20 on a one-yard run by Shandon Campbell. Campbell had two touchdowns in the game.

With 47 seconds left, Metcalf sealed the game with his third interception.

Faith Academy finished with 408 yards total offense, including 305 rushing from the single wing attack. The Flames averaged 6.3 yards per carry.

Byrd was two of four passing for 78 yards and one touchdown. Ellis was two of three passing for another 22 yards.

McAnally caught two passes for 44 yards and a touchdown. Freeman caught one pass for 39 yards and Hunter Manchac added one reception for 19 yards.

Byrd finished with 16 carries for 144 yards while Freeman had 76 yards on just seven carries. Ellis rushed 14 times for 74 yards.

Tackle leaders for the Flames were Michael Masterson (six tackles, five unassisted), Ellis (four tackles, four unassisted), Matt Manley (five tackles, two unassisted, deflected pass) and Byrd (four tackles, two unassisted).

The Flames will face John Paul II Friday at Marble Falls Middle School.
