Hershel E. " Grandad” Fowler, 94, of Marble Falls, died Sept. 30 in his home following a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ernestine Fowler, they were married in Odessa, Texas, and their one child, Johnny Ted (JT) Fowler of Austin.
He is also survived by one daughter in Aylesbery, England; brother Ted Fowler of Coahoma, Texas; four grandchildren Christy Scoggins of Marble Falls, Brandy Fowler of Midland, Texas, Lesa and Daniel of England, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother Jessie Fowler, father Rufus Fowler, sister Tuma Fowler, and brothers Wallace and Rufus.
Hershel was born Oct. 8, 1917, in Townly, Ala., and moved later in his childhood to Texas. He was one of the few old cowboys left. He worked on the Powell Ranch in Coahoma, Texas, in which he had many fond memories and often spoke of the times he spent breaking horses. He was the oldest of five children and with the early death of his father, he went to work very early in life. He never complained about helping support his family. He just didn’t believe in complaining. His attitude was ‘do it, fix it or move it but don’t waste time doing it.’
Hershel served his country in the Army Air Corps in which he served in the European theater processing pictures. He was proud to report that all his brothers served. He had a strong belief of civil service.
After he returned from the war in 1945, he returned to Coahoma and began working in the oil field as a driller. He retired from the oil field after working at Mobile Oil for over 30 years.
In the years after retirement, he and his wife traveled a bit and then spent time being the driver/babysitter for his great-grandchildren Cody and Heather Scoggins. He managed to help 3 generations of Fowler children make it to and from school every day and then off to college. During the school days, while he was already in his eighties, he spent building barns and fences with his Grandson-in-law Billy Scoggins.
