He put up a good fight to the relentless disease dementia, with the last 5 years being a struggle. His wife Lois was by his side during every stage of this horrible disease. She held true to their vows until the end of his special life.
Even though he suffered from dementia, we often saw the true Jim come out- still making jokes, filling in the blanks to some of his favorite sayings, and making up new ones. He loved his family the most, and also loved fishing, hunting, barbering, gardening, camaraderie, vegetable stands, Port A, making up nicknames, the Texas Longhorns, and Paul Harvey radio.*
Wright was a long time resident of Austin. He moved here in 1961 with his family in tow. He had
several places he called home as a barber: Garlands Flat Top Shop, the Orange and White Barbershop, a shop at Medical Arts Square, and, the one he was most proud of, The Sportsman’s Barbershop, where he worked for 25 years. Customers loved coming in to see all of the UT memorabilia and hunting trophies mounted on the wall. His customers brought in generations of their family for that one of a kind cut and story. He loved his customers and showed the same appreciation for everyone. It was a place where they could sit back, relax, get an old fashioned
shave, haircut, and the latest news.
He would want to be remembered as a family man; he loved his family and life and lived it to
the fullest, and always had time to help a friend or neighbor. He was a true sportsman and a long time Austinite that loved his community. He also held his home of Lampasas and Nix close at heart.
After he retired, he and Lois left Austin to live on Lake Buchanan. This was the most exciting time of their life. You would often hear him say, "This is country livin’ ain’t it.” We are going to miss his funny sayings, his sweet smile and boastful laugh, and all the fun and excitement he brought to our lives. Heaven rejoice: big Jimmy has arrived. Wright was born on Sept. 24, 1937, in Lampasas.
On Jan. 29, 1959, he married the love of his life, Lois Bradley. They were married for 53 years.
Survivors include his wife Lois; daughters Bridget Dear and husband Tim, and Tina Cauley and husband Terry; grandchildren Carly Dear, James Cauley, Troy Cauley, and Sarah Cauley; sisters Charlene Slusser, Ginger Whitesell, and Jane Kenyon; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by daughter Nancy Wright Rose; parents Otis and Christine; and sisters
Mary Jo Woodward and Judy Queen. The family would like to thank Dr. Howard Marcus and Dr.
David Morris, Jim’s long-time doctors and friends.
