Helen Irene (Scott) Bradley, 88, died peacefully on Monday, Nov. 19 at her home in Horseshoe Bay. She was born on April 12, 1924 to J.D. and Ethel Scott in Tuscaloosa, Ala. She was raised in and around Birmingham. Bradley worked during World War II at the facility that became Oak Ridge National Laboratory during the United States’ super-secret World War II project to construct an atomic bomb (the Manhattan Project) where all activities were highly classified.
She met her future husband Harry at the local skating rink. They married and moved to Texas to start a business and a family. She was an avid golfer and gin rummy player.
Her numerous golf trophies included multiple championships at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas as well as Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Club in Conroe, Texas. She was also a member at Brae Burn Country Club in Houston and Horseshoe Bay Resort where she hung up her clubs as she approached the age of 80.
She loved her townhome on the Slick Rock golf course and often sat on the back porch to watch the golfers finish up on the 18th hole. She enjoyed the assistance and expertise of her great-grandson Luke to fish rampant golf balls from the pond and hazard behind her house. Of special note: Bradley was the very first female to play in the Pro-Am at the Doral-Eastern Open on the Blue Monster Course in Miami in the early 1970’s.
She is preceded in death was her son Jerry Robert Bradley, husband Harry E. Bradley, her parents, sister Hazel Scott Miller, and brothers Herdman and Harlace Scott.
She is survived by her daughter Nancy Bradley Davis and husband Jimmy Davis of Horseshoe Bay; grandchildren Lara Davis Vogelpohl and husband David, Shelley Davis of Austin, Jerry (Jay) Bradley and wife Amanda of Sugarland, and Carl Bradley of Round Rock; great-grandchildren Luke and Jake Vogelpohl of Austin, and baby girl Heather Bradley of Sugarland due in February; extended family members Kathy Bradley, Jamie Kocian, Eric and Melissa Douglass; special companion and loyal dance partner Warren Fontenot; numerous nieces and nephews; and brother Herbert Scott of Columbus, Ga.
Her wish was to be cremated with her ashes distributed about several of her favorite golf courses. The family will have a private celebration of her life at a later date.
