Eleanor Helmann, of Sunrise Beach, TX, passed away August 25, 2024 at a local nursing facility. She was born October 17, 1924 in Portage, Wisconsin. After nursing school, Eleanor joined the Nurse Cadet program and served six months active duty in the States during World War II. She then worked as a surgical nurse in civilian hospitals before joining an Army military unit and called to active duty in 1953. Eleanor was assigned to Basic training at Ft. Sam Houston and throughout her military career served a total of 9 years there. From 1971-72, she served at the US Army Hospital Longbinh Post 24th Evacuation Hospital, Vietnam. Eleanor retired from active duty with the rank of Lt. Colonel in August 1975 after 22 years of service. After retirement, Eleanor enjoyed traveling around the country with friends in their RVs.
She was an avid and accomplished golfer as well as an animal and bird lover.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Esther Helmann, and brother Bob Helmann. She is survived by her nephews James (Colleen) Helmann, and Robert Helmann and several great-nieces and nephews. She also leaves many close friends and neighbors.
