An upcoming holiday, honoring those who have served in the Armed Forces, will be marked by a ceremonious events in Marble Falls and Llano.
Marble Falls
The Rotary Club of Marble Falls will present a Veterans Day Program Monday, Nov. 11, at noon at Rotary Memorial Park (adjacent to Johnson Park).
The guest speaker, Marble Falls High School senior Chris Meissen, will attend in character as Abraham Lincoln exemplifying the historic figure's military role as commander in chief of the U.S. military.
Rotary Club President Russell Sander will welcome the attendees and introduce the participants. Mark McCary, a U.S. Air Force veteran, will serve as master of ceremonies.
The Marble Falls VFW Post 10376 will post the colors, Rotarian Bill Rives will lead in the national anthem and Rotarian Lorinda Peters will play the bagpipes.
Pancake Breakfast
In Burnet VFW Post 6974 and American Legion will host the Veterans Day Pancake Breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon at the post, 1402 West Buchanan Dr. in Burnet.
The event will celebrate local veterans and serve pancakes, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, coffee and juice. There is no charge but donations are appreciated.
Quilts of Valor
In Llano, volunteers are hosting a Veterans Day Quilts of Valor Presentation Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11. The event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at the John L. Kuykendall Event Center & Arena, 2200 W. Ranch Road 152, just outside Llano. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. featuring a number of quilt presentations, speakers and a barbecue lunch.
Veterans Day not only holds special meaning and historic significance, the day is a federal holiday with events occurring throughout the US.
In 1918, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, German leaders signed the armistice that ended World War 1. Originally this day was called Armistice Day. In 1954 the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor veterans of all wars. Veterans Day is celebrated annually on the 11th day of November on whichever day of the week it falls.
A National Veterans Day celebration is held each year on Nov. 11 at the Arlington National Cemetery. This involves laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. This ceremony begins precisely at 11 a.m.
