Black Vulture
The Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) is a common sight, soaring gracefully on thermals or perching conspicuously on fences and dead trees. Fun fact: Black Vultures are highly social birds and often roost in large groups, which helps them locate food more effectively. These birds are easily recognized by their black plumage, featherless grayish- black heads, and short, square tails. In flight, their broad wings display white patches near the wingtips, a key characteristic for identification. Unlike their cousins, the Turkey Vultures, Black Vultures have a less pronounced sense of smell and rely more on sight to locate carrion.
