The filing deadline is underway for candidates vying for election in May for entities including school boards, cities, municipal utility districts and emergency services districts.
Wednesday, Jan. 15, was the first day to file for a place on the May 2025 General Election Ballot. Filing goes through Friday, Feb. 14, at 5 p.m. for the May 3 election, which will feature both school and city candidates as well as other districts.
Cities
In a city election, an application for place on the ballot (PDF) must be filed with the city secretary of that city. In a special election held by a city, an application for a place on the special election ballot must be filed.
School districts
Current state law requires a candidate for trustee of an independent school district to be a qualified voter by the time required. An application for place on the ballot must be filed with the secretary of the school district board. The same applies for a special election.
Other districts
For other district elections (i.e. water districts, hospital districts, etc.) an application for place on the ballot must be filed with the secretary of the district board. If the entity is authorized to hold a special election, an application for a place on the special election ballot (PDF) must be filed with the secretary of the district board.
To obtain applications, contact the entity in which a potential candidate would like to run for office. Also, go to https://www.sos.texas. gov/elections/ for calendars, dates, registration and other key election information.
