A Meadowlakes city councilman - pivotal in promoting the city's development ventures - has died of a heart attack, according to a statement from the mayor.
Mayor Mark Bentley announced Wednesday at Don Wheeler was stricken by the heart ailment this week.
"It truly saddens me to announce that one of our brothers on the City Council, Don Wheeler, suffered a severe heart attack Monday evening (Feb. 3) and died," he stated in his weekly newsletter. "Don was elected just eight months ago and immediately became an active member of the City Council, bringing his construction expertise to the table."
Wheeler was 76 years old. Wheeler was elected to the council in May 2024. He was a long-time member of the property owners association as well as formerly the director of gate security for the community. He was an outspoken supporter of the community's voter-approved planned city complex and renovations.
"When Don spoke on his area of expertise, people listened. His prospective will not go unappreciated," Bentley wrote. "He embodied small town wisdom.
"In his short time on the council the architects, contractors, and engineers have sat up and listened intently to Don’s dose of utilitarian practicality," he added. "Keep Don’s wife Margaret and family in your prayers."
