LCRA tested six new floodgates at Wirtz Dam on Wednesday, May 7. The floodgates were opened one at a time with a siren at the dam sounding before each opening.
Each floodgate was partially opened, then closed. Flows downstream were expected to be no greater than during normal hydroelectric generation operations and will not be enough to cause flooding conditions.
The new custom- made floodgates are part of a three-year, $76 million floodgate renovation project at Wirtz Dam. The dam creates Lake LBJ with communities on the shoreline including Granite Shoals, Highland Haven and Horseshoe Bay.
