A well-traveled thoroughfare just got a little more complicated for motorists as a project revs up in southeast Burnet County.

TxDOT officials released details about the $6.3 million project on Texas 71. The work, which started this month, “will add left-turn lanes, right-turn lanes and a signal at the intersection of SH 71 and CR 401,” said TxDOT spokeswoman Kellen Mohrmann.

“This is a joint project, funded by TxDOT and Burnet County,” she said. “This safety improvement project … is scheduled to be complete in spring 2026, weather permitting.”

The state contracted with Hunter Industries, Ltd. for the project.

Officials ask motorists to take precautions.

“When driving through work zones, drivers should stay alert, put away distractions, and drive to conditions,” Mohrmann said. “We also encourage drivers to avoid tailgating, be mindful of construction area road signs and watch out for road crews.”
