Flash flooding prompts LCRA to open floodgates
After the Llano River crested in Kingsland at the Slab (RR 3404), swift currents made their way to the Colorado River and lakes LBJ and Marble Falls, prompting LCRA to open at least five of 10 floodgates on Max Starcke Dam to send water down through the Lake Travis reservoir. Floodgate operations through the Independence Day weekend in the Highland Lakes moved downstream a torrent of stormwater caused by about 20 inches of rain in a two-day period.

“People need to use extreme caution under these conditions,” said John Hofmann, LCRA executive vice president of Water. “Flows in the lakes can be deceptively fast, and we want people to remain safe.

“Unless it’s an emergency, we are encouraging people to stay away from these three lakes for the immediate future.” By Saturday, July 5, the so-called “rain bomb” resulted in high volumes of runoff that caused Lake Travis to rise more than 11 feet and was expected to continue through the weekend and for the next few days, officials predicted.
