Special to The Highlander In response to the news of a confirmed case of distemper in the area, the city of Marble Falls Animal Control Facility has temporarily suspended all intake and adoptions for two weeks.
Distemper is a highly contagious and possibly deadly viral disease. According to the American Veterinary Medial Association, “Canine distemper is a contagious and serious disease caused by the canine distemper virus. The virus attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of dogs.”
Officials said, the city of Marble Falls, in collaboration with other shelters and veterinary clinics in the area, will continue to monitor the situation closely to implement effective disease management strategies.
“We are committed to enhancing disease awareness and prevention among our community partners. The health and safety of the animals in our care and our community remain our highest priority,” according to the media release. “We appreciate the community’s support, cooperation, and understanding as we manage this situation and will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available.
“We strongly urge all pet owners in the area to ensure their pets’ vaccinations are current. Plans for additional free community vaccination clinics are also underway.”
