Suicide is not just a distant statistic. It’s a reality touching lives here in Burnet County, and local leaders are calling for an urgent shift in how we address it. At an September 30 Suicide Prevention meeting at the Burnet AgriLife Auditorium, guest speaker Terry Bentley Hill joined 39 attendees representing school districts, the court system, law enforcement, first responders,
hospitals, mental health providers, and suicide prevention advocates to confront the crisis.
The numbers are sobering. In 2023, 49,316 Americans died by suicide, and another 1.5 million attempted. In Texas, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death overall and the 2nd leading cause for Texans ages 15-34.
