An ex-police officer received five years probation after the district attorney’s office, after consulting with the victim’s family, agreeing to a plea deal.

33rd/424th Judicial District Attorney Perry Thomas confirmed that the case of former Burnet Police patrol sergeant Russell Butler was put to rest in November after six years.

Butler entered a guilty plea on a charge of criminally negligent homicide, punishable by 180 days to two years in a state jail facility and a $1,000 fine. He received a 5-year deferred sentence with stipulations including prohibition from owning a firearm as well as permanently surrendering his peace officer license.
