Authorities are investigating a case in which a mail carrier contractor was allegedly found in possession of mail illegally.
Melanie Sue Rodriguez, 49, of Horseshoe Bay South was arrested on Feb. 20 and faces multiple charges, officials confirmed.
According to jail records, she is charged with credit card abuseelderly, a third degree felony; credit card abuse, state jail felony; fraudulent possession of identifying information, state jail felony; and theft of mail, a state jail felony.
“On Jan. 9, we received information that a gift card had been stolen. That investigation led to the arrest of Melanie Sue Rodriguez,” said Horseshoe Bay Police Chief Jason Graham said.
As a result of the charges, a number of social media platforms, including NextDoor and Facebook, erupted with local residents posting theories about the suspect and the US Postal Service.
“There’s a lot of people really not happy with our mail service out here,” Graham said. “Just because of this social media post, we’ve had several people call thinking they had mail that was possibly stolen.”
Graham added he would not reveal how much mail the suspect is alleged to have stolen due to the ongoing probe, but that the investigation may present more clues.
“I don’t know what it’s going to possibly turn into,” he said. “I know this is going to be going on for a while.”
As of Feb. 26, Rodriguez remained in the Burnet County Jail on bonds totaling $90,000.
