Lorean Sindelar was drawn to the Highland Lakes like so many others and made a permanent move to Kingsland from Austin 30 years ago.
A retired teacher, she did not waste any time in getting involved in her community, primarily with the Lions Club-Kingsland chapter, while also serving on the KMUD board (2006-2023).
Look into any of the Lions Club’s important fundraisers, and you will find Sindelar at the forefront.
She especially lights up when asked about the organization’s key program.
“Vision is a major thrust of Lions International, and, locally, four of us are certified to do Vision Screenings. During the 2024-2025 school year alone, we conducted 688 screenings throughout Burnet, Llano, San Saba counties and beyond,” she shared. “It is free to schools. We also can provide free eye exams and glasses to children and adults in need.”
Chosen as the 2024 Lion of the Year, Sindelar also chairs the annual golf tournament, scheduled for Thursday, April 2, at the Lighthouse Country Club in Kingsland.
The tournament benefits Meals on Wheels, school lunch programs and the vision program, and more sponsors are needed for this important fundraiser.
Registration and lunch begin at noon with the Shotgun Start kicking off at 1 p.m.
But wait, there’s more – the second Tuesday, at 6 p.m., in the Kingsland Library meeting room, Sindelar joins the players at the club’s Bunco Night for fun and food. “It has become a Supper Fest with so many bringing potluck choices ” she noted.
She also greets guests at the Pancake Breakfast, held at the Kingsland Community Center the Saturdays of Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.
And her club’s fundraising efforts support “White Cane Day” in October, another aspect of their Vision mission.
When not immersed in Lions’ activities, Sindelar serves as rally master for an RV Group that travels around the state five times a year, conducting mission work through devotionals and song.
RV participants take time to enjoy their friendships.
“We celebrate Christmas in July, having lunch with each other, and in November, we gather for Thanksgiving Dinner at the RV Park Clubhouse, featuring a Cookie Exchange.
When asked what she is most proud of among her community contributions, she does not hesitate to speak out about the vision screenings. “If we can reach children from infant to seven-year-old, we can detect astigmatism, lazy eye, and all the other sight issues that can be corrected early on.”
Everyone is welcome to learn more about Lions Club at their weekly meetings held on Thursdays, noon to 1 p.m. at the Kingsland Library.
Member Debbie Alexander provides a delicious $10 lunch.
