The deadline is looming for public commenting on a proposed mining permit for a Marble Falls aggregate operation.

Along with gathering public comments, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) will hold a public meeting on Huber Carbonates, LLC’S proposed amendment to its air quality permit.

Two Huber mines, which specialize in limestone extraction, operate within the Marble Falls City limits, one just off Avenue N and the other off U.S. 281 just south of the Lake Marble Falls Bridge.

Huber is seeking a renewal and amendment of permit No. 8252, “which would authorize modifications to and continued operation of a limestone crushing facility.”

The meeting is scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at Marble Falls High School’s Max Copeland Gymnasium.

In May 2025, Marble Falls City Council approved the filing of a protest with TCEQ against Huber Carbonates LLC for more time to assess the mining operation’s permit renewal request.

City officials reported they expect the amendment will increase production at Huber which would result in more noise and release of “particulates” into the air.

At that time, Huber Mine and Plant Manager Eric Sims addressed the council.

“It (the protest) makes sense to me from a legal standpoint,” Sims said, adding that plant functions would be subject to “a whole bunch of special conditions” and they would be related only to its underground mining operations, not surface mining.

“Our intention is to be a good neighbor,” Sims continued.

For details about the status of the application, visit the Commissioners’ Integrated Database (CID) at www.tceq.texas.gov/ goto/cid. Enter the permit number. The notice was posted April 1, giving the public at least 30 days to submit comments.

The application is available for viewing and copying at the

TCEQ central office, the TCEQ Austin regional office, and the Marble Falls Library, 101 Main Street. Visit huber.com, search Marble Falls.
