As a large aggregate business gets ready to expand, the public has a chance to let a permitting entity know their thoughts about the company’s latest quarry project.

Collier Materials recently purchased nearly 300 acres on CR 120 in Burnet County to launch a mining operation targeting granite gravel.

The company recently applied for a stormwater runoff permit with the Lower Colorado River Authority. The public has until May 29 to present comments to the entity.

According to LCRA, “[o]n Feb. 16, 2026, Westward Environmental Inc. submitted an application on behalf of Collier Materials Inc. for a quarry/ mine permit in Burnet County. The project would require a permit from LCRA under the Highland Lakes Watershed Ordinance, which regulates stormwater management to protect water quality in relation to development.”

The acreage, northwest of Marble Falls, extends from the 7200 block at the railroad tracks westward to Gregory Lane. The planned mining pit would be located just east of another Collier mining pit as well as around the corner from two other pits, owned by the company, on CR 121.

“The top red material, we’re getting short on that (at the existing pits),” Kevin Collier has told The Highlander. “That’s why we bought this other property.”

The application details that the land is two miles west of the intersection of CR 120 (Fairland Road) and U.S. 281. A posted sign at the entryway states that the posting date was March 25. LCRA officials con - firmed that the comment -ing period has been extended to the end of May.

“Collier is proposing additional quarry activity, including mobile and permanent mining, at the new site,” said LCRA spokeswoman Clara Tuma in a statement.

“On March 12, LCRA determined the application was administratively complete (meaning all required information had been submitted), and now is performing a technical review to determine if the application meets the requirements of the HLWO (Highland Lakes Watershed Ordinance).

“Under the ordinance, LCRA may not consider issues outside of the HLWO jurisdiction in its technical review,” she added.

Aggregate company representatives have mailed notices of the application to nearby landowners and local of- ficials as well as posted the notice at the site.

LCRA welcomes comments on the project at [email protected] or by mail to LCRA Water Quality, P.O. Box 220, Mail Stop L106, Austin, TX 78767) through May 29, 2026. For a copy of the application, members of the public can email [email protected].
