The Burnet County Area Fair this weekend will give everyone an opportunity to take home homemade goodies and handmade projects.
Members of the public are invited to the event which is scheduled to start this morning at the Burnet County AgriLife Auditorium and adjoining campus, 607 N. Vandeveer Street in Burnet.
“Donated items will include: baked goods of all kinds – cookies, breads, brownies, etc. Take home baked goods for supper or eat them at the fair,” spokeswoman Lela Goar shared. “Spruce up your yard or home with wonder- ful finds in the plant area; and amazing local, high-quality craft items.
“Along with everything from quilting and canning entries to baked goods and plants, the fair also features exhibits, a country store, a silent auction and craft and food vendors,” she added.
The “battle of the blue ribbons” started Wednesday, June 10, with registration. Judges descended on displays and entries on Thursday in anticipation of opening ceremonies today. The public is welcome to browse and take home donated items through Saturday until 3 p.m.
“The Burnet County Area Fair is looking forward to the area quilters showing their artistic work,” Goar continued.
The quilting division, showcasing beautiful handiwork, has 58 categories which will be judged and awarded ribbons in three age categories; junior youth (under 12), senior youth (1217), and adults (over 18).
Other activities include an old-fashioned, homemade ice cream competition. The “crankoff” will take place today, Friday, June 12 at 2 p.m. Recipes were accepted on Wednesday and Thursday. Categories are vanilla, chocolate, fruit, sherbet and others. Judges will determine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each category and Best of Show for each age group (Junior Youth: under 12, Senior Youth: 12 – 17, and Adult: 18 and over).
Also, the Needlework Division includes knitting, crochet, quilting (both hand and machine), embroidery (both hand and machine), needlepoint, tatting/lacework, rug making and applique (both hand and machine).
A great category for all ages is Arts & Crafts which has 21 categories to choose from with youngsters submitting multiple items in each category.
Also, everyone can participate in the 42 Tournament on Saturday, June 13, starting with registration at 8:30 a.m. at the AgriLife Auditorium. The tournament is free and open to men and women, and the winning team will each receive a set of engraved dominoes.
A Country Store will be located inside the main exhibit hall.
“The mission of this “little” store is to raise funds to help keep the fair free for the public and support the scholarship( s) given each year by selling donated items,” Goar says.
The Burnet County Area Fair is a presenta- tion of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension of Burnet County, Highland Lakes Master Gardener Association, the Texas Extension Education Association of Burnet County, the Highland Lakes Quilt Guild and the Bluebonnet Button Club.
