As the summer heat intensifies our gardens come alive with vibrant colors and juicy flavors. Watermelons, in particular, thrive in our region's warm temperatures and long growing season. With the right techniques and variety selection, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest of sweet and refreshing watermelons.
Choosing the Right Variety Select watermelon varieties that are resistant to fusarium wilt and harmful nematodes, common issues in our region. 'Crimson Sweet', 'Sugar Baby', and 'Yellow Doll' are excellent choices.
Planting and Soil Preparation Plant watermelon seeds in late spring to early summer, when the soil has warmed up to at least 70°F (21°C), presently we have this requirement covered. Space them 3 to 4 feet apart in rows that are 8 feet apart. Test your soil. If on the alkaline side, add organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil structure and fertility. Take advantage of our region's long growing season by planting a second crop in late summer for a fall harvest.
