Shirley Joan Heffington Rogers

October 2, 1935 — August 16, 2017

Shirley Joan Heffington Rogers, 81, a lifetime resident of Marble Falls, Texas, passed away at her home by her husband’s side on Aug. 16, 2017.

Shirley was born, at home, on Turner Farm (Spicewood) on Oct. 2, 1935.

She was a 1953 graduate of Marble Falls High School, where she was a cheerleader, basketball player, class favorite, and Homecoming Queen.

She met the love of her life, Jack Rogers (from Taylor, Texas) in 1950 when he came to the area to work on a ranch. Shirley and Jack enjoyed many wonderful years together and just celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on June 18, 2017.

She enjoyed a successful career as a banker, working at Home State Bank (which is now IBC Bank) in Marble Falls from 1954 to 1966. She was promoted from bookkeeper to vice president in 1963 and then to vice president and cashier in July 1964. She decided to retire from banking in 1966 to focus on raising her children.

Shirley had many talents. She was a great steward of the land that the Lord gave her. She loved to work outside, side by side with her husband, more than anything in the world. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and cooking. She could build just about anything, including bunk beds, tree houses, bookshelves, etc., even adding on rooms to houses and building closets and stairs. She enjoyed drawing up home plans for her friends as well. She had a gift for making everyone around her feel comfortable and loved.

Shirley was always supportive of the Marble Falls Rodeo Association that her husband and two other men started in 1957. The rodeo association benefits the area youth in many ways, including through college scholarships and 4H support. She helped in many ways, but her biggest contribution was by volunteering to run the concession stand for over ten years. The rodeo association awarded her a plaque for all of her hard work in 1991. Shirley and Jack were awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Marble Falls Chamber of Commerce in 1999.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ira Boyd Heffington and Beulah Beatrice Heffington of Marble Falls; her brothers and their wives, Lyndon and Ruth Heffington and Bill and Ada Mae Heffington, all of Marble Falls, and her brother in law, Leonard Gray of Waco, Texas.

She is survived by her husband, Jack Rogers of Marble Falls; her children, Jacque Horn and husband Charlie of Marble Falls; Steve Rogers and girlfriend Nicole Nelson of Marble Falls and Bubba Ussery and wife Betty of Goldthwaite; her sister Patsy Gray of Woodway, Texas; brother, Les “Dwayne” Heffington and wife Betty of Kingsland. She will also always be lovingly remembered by her grandkids: Tyler Horn, Sheridyn Horn, Denver Horn, Ryan Rogers, Clay Rogers, Shilo and Wyatt Nelson, and many nieces and nephews.

Her family will hold a memorial service for her at the Smithwick Church of Christ on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 10 a.m. with a graveside service at Smithwick Cemetery following, which will be officiated by Linvel Baker.

Pallbearers include Troy Fox, Craig Seward, Steve Jenkins, Perry Malkemus, Damon Nauman, Dean McDonough, Danny Hamilton and Stacy Heinatz. Honorary pallbearers include Bob Jay Darragh, David Fisher, J. Don McAlpin, Matt Becker and Galen Dilworth.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the many friends and caregivers that have made a huge difference in her quality of life, especially her best friend Nancy O’Connor.

Donations can be made to the Marble Falls Rodeo Association or the Stacy Seward Scholarship Fund.
