Ruby Lee McClish Hall Tuttle

August 20, 1926 — July 13, 2018

Ruby Lee McClish was born in Liberty Hill, Texas, on Aug. 20, 1926, to Lennie and John C. McClish, and passed from this life into heavenly eternal life on July 13, 2018, at the age of 91 years.

When Ruby was six years old, the banks crashed across our nation, and it became necessary for the McClish family to relocate by mule-drawn wagon from Liberty Hill, Texas, to Smithwick, a small community nestled in the Hill Country where John McClish, her father, owned more than 100 acres of land. The family moved into a small log cabin which stood on the land not far from the banks of Hickory Creek. It was there where they struggled and survived the years of the Great Depression. They were a close-knit and loving family, respected by all who knew them.

After marrying and becoming a homemaker and mother to four children, Ruby attended night school at Austin High School in Austin in about 1956. She learned to type on a manual typewriter and soon became a typing whiz. Having only a ninth-grade education, with her intelligence, her competitive nature, and her fierce determination, she excelled in any challenge she met. She applied for and acquired a position in the Driver’s License division of the Texas Department of Public Safety headquarters in Austin. After several years, she earned a promotion to Fingerprint Examiner on what was called “The Line,” which was the fingerprint section of the DPS and a position a woman had never before been allowed to hold. At the time of her retirement, she held the position of Supervisor over “The Line.”

Ruby enjoyed and loved her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. God’s timing is, indeed, amazing to us, for as Ruby was taken to her heavenly home, only a few hours later, on July 13, He blessed us with the gift of a precious newborn baby girl, Shayla Rose Cox!

Ruby’s heart exuded unconditional love for her family and a myriad of friends who all respected and adored this unique woman whose brilliant smile lit each room she entered. She was a treasure to her family and to all who knew her. Leaving us with the blessing of her sweet spirit, we will forever miss this special woman’s delightful presence.

Ruby was a member of the Church of Christ.

Ruby is preceded in death by her parents; her husbands L.C. Hall and John R. Tuttle; stepsons Kenneth Tuttle and John R. Tuttle Jr.; and step-grandchildren Richard Young and Laurie Huber.

She is survived by children Judy Cox (Sam), Andra Michel (John), Lennie Edwards and Leon Hall (Nelda); stepchildren Eunice Young, Ruby Stroup (Raymond) and James Tuttle (Rita); 11 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 17, 2018 from 6-8 PM at Smithwick Church of Christ. Funeral Service will be Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at Smithwick Church of Christ followed by burial at the Smithwick Cemetery.
