The Llano County Republican Party will hold its county convention this Saturday, June 20, at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Llano.

Local Republicans are expected to approve and adopt resolutions for the state GOP Convention, to be held July 16-18 in Houston. They are also expected to elect delegates who will represent the county.

The county party executive leadership has already taken one unusual step this political season by unanimously voting to oppose one candidate in the State Board of Education primary runoff — a rarity as the executive leadership usually tries to avoid endorsing any particular primary candidate.

Earlier this year, the LCRP executive committee agreed to oppose District 5 SBOE candidate Rob Morrow, who squares off against Lani Popp in the race to run for the seat currently held by Ken Mercer, who did not seek re-election. Morrow, who frequently wears a jester hat in public, was the leading votegetter in the March primary, but did not win enough votes to avoid a runoff.

Morrow, a former Travis County GOP chair and onetime fringe presidential candidate, was called out by party leadership for allegedly making “misogynistic and vulgar” statements about candidates from both parties as well as making criminal allegations against President Donald Trump and other GOP officeholders and behaving in a manner “demeaning to the Republican Party and to the Office to which he seeks election.”

“The solid education of our Children is one of our most important responsibilities in life, not only as Republicans, but as Americans,” LCRP chair Doug Sanders said. “The Texas School System is overseen by the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE). That Board has tremendous power over what text books are used in Texas’ schools and over what our Children learn when they go to school.

“Your Llano County Republican Party (LCRP) generally does not take a position on various candidates who are running in the Republican Primary. This is the exception!”
