One dead in SUV collision with 18-wheeler

UPDATE: As of 4 p.m. on Thursday May 6, Marble Falls police confirmed the name of the deceased as Gary Peter Gernon of Horseshoe Bay. The report stated that Gernon, driving a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, was traveling north on U.S. 281 when he "failed to yield the right-of-way" turning left onto FM 2147 W. The vehicle then collided with a southbound 18-wheeler.

A person has died May 4 following a collision between an 18-wheeler and an SUV on U.S. 281 around noon at the FM 2417 intersection in Marble Falls, according to police.

“The driver of the Chevrolet SUV died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash,” the Marble Falls police statement read. “The driver of the eighteen-wheeler was transported via Marble Falls Area EMS to Baylor Scott & White Hospital (Marble Falls) for evaluation.”

At the scene crews extricated the driver of the SUV, while first responders directed and rerouted traffic.

Wreckers responded to the scene and removed the SUV – most of which was wedged between the rig and the traffic pole down an embankment in the southwest corner of the intersection.

Police are withholding the identification of the occupants pending notification of next of kin.

By late in the afternoon, the intersection remain partially closed, pending a fuel spill clean-up operations and traffic signal repairs.
