Dennie Ray Short, 74 of Round Mountain passed away on October 9, 2020, at home in Round Mountain, Texas at the age of 74 after fighting cancer and challenging heart issues. Dennie was dearly loved by his wife of almost 58 years Linda Poe Short. And their children, Tammy Cardwell (Billy) of Lakewood, Washington; Michael Short (Becky) of Round Mountain, Texas; Tina Ashmore (Michael) of Bulverde, Texas; Christopher Short (Jana) of Round Rock, Texas.

Dennie and Linda were blessed with thirteen grandchildren: Brandon Cardwell, Brittany Cardwell, Brad Cardwell, Steven Short, Sean Short, Patrick Short, Brittany Briton, Kathleen Ashmore, Michael Ashmore, Zackary Short, Sierra Short, Levi Short and Emma Short. Great grandchildren include Melody, McKenna, Steven, Emelia, and Conner.

He is also survived by his brother Sam Short; sister Dorothy Walker; sister in law Patsy Fisher (Jimmy); and brother in law Kenneth Poe. He loved his nieces and nephews as if they were his own. (Curtiss Cain, Norma Logue, Nancy Steele, David Short, Kevin Fisher, Mark Fisher, Heather English, Tiko Albert, Tony Johnson, and Troy Poe).

He is preceded in death by his parents Clifton and Norma Short; sister Patricia Cain; sister in law Leanne Paul-Short; sister in law Linda Poe; and nieces Deanna Dufty and Lisa Cain.

Dennie was born with a heart defect in which the doctors did not think he would live much past his 20s. He was happy to have each year with his family. Dennie attended school in Brady, Texas, where he met the love of his life. He developed a passion for the great outdoors that he passed on to many of his family members and others that he came in contact with.

He loved hunting, fishing, camping, firearms and playing 42 dominos. He loved western movies and TV shows along with country music.

He always had butterscotch candies and sweets handy for snacking. He enjoyed making dutch oven peach cobblers. And he worked as a carpenter all his life and could build just about anything.

Viewing will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, October 15, 2020, at Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Funeral Home, 6300 W. William Cannon Drive, Austin.
