Herman Christopher Greer, 78, of Sunrise Beach, Texas, passed away December 12, 2020. He was born to Albert “Toby” Greer and Virginia Boyd Greer on July 5, 1942 in El Paso, Texas.

Chris and his family moved to the Rio Grande Valley town of McAllen, Texas when he was a young man. He graduated from McAllen High School and shortly thereafter, selflessly, joined the United States Marine Corps in 1960.

Chris spent several years as an active Marine and was in the Marine Reserves until 1996 achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer-4. During his time in the reserves and afterwards, Chris worked for various oil and gas companies as a Senior Vessel Engineer.

Chris retired from the oil and gas industry in 2012. During his retirement years, he enjoyed deer hunting in the Texas Hill Country, fishing with his grandchildren, and getting the family together for his famous shrimp boils and wonderful steaks. He enjoyed relaxing, watching T.V., and searching for his favorite shows. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and his dogs, Yogi, Princess, and BooBoo.

Chris is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Greer Newman and her husband Roger Newman, Tracey Greer Sherrill and her husband James “Stoney” Sherrill, III. He is also survived by his five grandchildren; Elizabeth Szalczer, Christopher Sherrill, Sean Szalczer, Jordan Sherrill, and Jackson Sherrill; and one greatgrandchild, Elijah.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Melodye Overby Greer, brother Charles Nichols Greer, and nephew, Gary Greer.

The visitation was held Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the Putnam Funeral Home in Kingsland, Texas. A funeral service followed with Reverend Karl Wallace officiating.

Pallbearers were James “Stoney” Sherrill, III, Roger Newman, Frank Szalczer, Christopher Sherrill, Sean Szalczer, Jordan Sherrill and Jackson Sherrill.

Chris’ care has been entrusted to Putnam Funeral Home and Crematory, 145 Texas Avenue, Kingsland.
