The Texas Press Association recognized The Highlander for outstanding achievement in several areas during its annual trade show and convention Jan. 16-18 at the 140th TPA Convention & Trade Show held at Moody Gardens Hotel, Convention Center & Spa in Galveston.

The Highlander won four awards in the 2018-19 TPA Better Newspaper Contest, finishing fifth overall in its circulation classification.

Marble Falls seeking match grants for bridge projects

Marble Falls City Council approved applying for matching grants funding two bridge crossing projects and a crossing emergency warning system to mitigate issues on city streets prone to flooding.

The FEMA grant request –- involving proposed bridges at low-water crossings on Avenue N and Nature Heights – was made Nov. 5 by Marble Falls Fire Rescue Chief Russell Sander during the regular meeting.

Toddler dies in crash on rain-slicked roadway in Round Mountain

A 17-month-old child from Meadowlakes and a Dripping Springs man died Sept. 1 in a two-vehicle collision on US 281, according to the Department of Public Safety report.

The crash happened at 5:20 p.m. that evening within the city limits of Round Mountain.

The report stated that a 2017 Honda CRV (unit 1) – driven by Stephen Neill, 76, of Dripping Springs – was southbound in the left lane.

City of Meadowlakes makes deal with POA for services

After a contentious year of negotiations, the City of Meadowlakes and the Meadowlakes Property Owners Association (MPOA) finally reached an agreement on a three-year service contract which will call for the MPOA to pay the city nearly $320,000.

Meadowlakes provides contractual customer service, accounting, payroll, recordkeeping and maintenance operations to the MPOA. The city's last contract with MPOA had called for the city to receive $96,913 per year ($8,076 per month) for three years, from October 2016 to September 2019.

Meadowlakes will continue to be served by the Marble Falls Area Emergency Medical Services for the next three years after City Council members unanimously approved a new contract with the organization at Tuesday's regular council meeting.
