The Marble Falls Lady Mustangs softball team returns to the diamond this month, starting with a scrimmage against Blanco on Jan. 29. The girls will host the Marble Falls tourney at the end of February, and district play is scheduled to begin on March 1. Contributed

A holiday tradition continued on Tuesday, Dec. 28 as the current Mustangs soccer team played against Marble Falls High School graduates in the annual alumni game.

The Marble Falls High School football team was recognized this week as 22 players received All-District 14-5A-2 nods, including 10 players on the First Team and a most valuable player. The Mustangs made it all the way to the third round this season – further than they’ve been in more than 20 years – behind their running attack and staunch defense.

For the first time in more than 20 years, the Marble Falls High School football team has a spot in the third round of the 5A Division 2 UIL playoffs after a 35-13 victory over Mission Veterans Memorial on Friday in San Antonio.

For the second straight season, the Marble Falls High School football team knocked Brenham out of the playoffs, but this year it took two overtimes to get it done. The Mustangs got a stop on fourth down in the second overtime period to secure a 27-21 win and a spot in the Area round of the playoffs.

The Marble Falls High School boys basketball team is seeking to build upon Head Coach Travis Crain’s system and the foundation set by standout players that graduated. Crain is entering his third season as head coach, and he views it as a “freeing” year.

Even in a 49-0 win over Austin Northeast Early College High School, Marble Falls football head coach Brian Herman was critical of his team’s performance. “We weren’t as sharp as we needed to be early,” he said.
