Thomas Slavin of Kingsland, Texas, was presented the award for Extensive Travel during the 29th Annual Governor’s Criminal Justice Volunteer Service Awards Ceremony today.

The award was presented by Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott, Texas Board of Criminal Justice Chairman Eric Nichols and Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Executive Director Bryan Collier at a ceremony in Austin.

“These award recipients, by volunteering countless hours, are helping to build a better Texas for themselves and everyone whose lives they touch,” Nichols said. “It is an honor to recognize them for their hard work and dedication.”

“These volunteers are true heroes,” Collier said. “Their compassion and commitment make a profound and lasting difference in the lives of many Texans. TDCJ, and the entire state, is better because of their service.”

Slavin has been an integral part of the Coleman Unit, acting as a teacher, preacher, and a Certified Volunteer Chaplain’s Assistant. Slavin’s unique approach to spiritual guidance is noteworthy, he uses humor to capture his audience while engaging in deep, thought-provoking discussions that encourage personal transformation.

He has assisted in the baptism of over 300 women and went on to teach a "New Believers" class. Furthermore, he teaches a weekly class called “Searching for Significance,” which encourages women to transform their ways of thinking.

Through his ministry, U-Too Ministries, Slavin conducts monthly church services that provide a sense of community and belonging for the women on the unit. The services offer a space for the women to connect with one another and grow spiritually.

Slavin is an asset to the Coleman Unit, and his contributions have made a lasting impact on the lives of the women he serves.

He has traveled more than 14,000 miles during Fiscal Year 2023, therefore, has been selected to receive the Extensive Travel Award. Slavin was one of 22 individuals and organizations from across the state recognized for their efforts to help inmates and those who are on parole and probation. They donate many hours of their personal time every year with the goal of changing lives.
