Marble Falls Fire Capt. Coy Guenter has come to many people’s aid, professionally and personally, over the years.

So when Precinct 4 Constable Missy Bindseil and her husband Ricky learned the man known to many as “Mr. Marble Falls” was battling cancer, they knew who should receive the proceeds from this year’s Marble Falls Pro Rodeo first responder steer saddle contest, which was held Friday, July 16, at the Charley Taylor Arena.

“When we first did it two years ago, we were looking for a way to raise money for Pink Out Marble Falls, but when we were looking this year for families to benefit from Pink Out, we suggested it should go to Coy and Chief (Russell) Sander immediately said yes,” Missy Bindseil said. “We went to all of the other departments and it was unanimous from all of them it should go to Coy.”

Steve Rogers of the Marble Falls Rodeo Association then agreed to make a matching donation as well as give Guenter a pair of Anderson Bean boots, which were presented to him Friday night. On top of that, Chicken Express and Twist Hair Studio also got involved and made donations that went to Guenter and his family. A total of $5,733 was raised for Guenter, who was visibly moved by the outpouring of love.

The donation from Twist was especially touching as that is where his mother works. The other stylists there took up a collection and somehow managed not to tip their hand to mother or son.

“How we kept it a secret from him, I don’t know, because so many people knew that was what we were doing,” Missy Bindseil said. “I know Coy is extremely appreciative and grateful.

“Whenever there is a fundraiser or something in town, Coy is there. He has volunteered for so many years and it sometimes goes unnoticed, but his nickname Mr. Marble Falls isn’t by accident,” she added. “He has helped raise many kids, whether through sporting events or school events or as a fireman. Some generations don’t know Marble Falls without Coy Guenter in it.

“When Ricky and I found out (Guenter’s diagnosis), we literally lost it. What would Marble Falls do without Coy Guenter? It would never be the same. It’s rare there are people who make that type of impact, but Coy is one in a million and he never complains. The last thing he should have to worry about right now is money.”
