Marble Falls Fire Rescue will host events to support those battling and surviving cancer as well as bring joy to the community helping them raise cancer awareness and prevention education.

Fire Chief Russell Sander extended an invitation to Marble Falls City Council members Oct. 5, along with the public, to participate and attend 2021 Pink Out activities and events this month.

“In October, we’re out there for breast cancer awareness month but also on Saturday, it is Pink Out Marble Falls. We have a street dance in the 300 block of Main Street, and the first responders will be doing a Wacky Olympics.

“It’s our event where we show support and recognize the members of our community who have had cancer and won, although it continues to be a fight for them no matter what,” he added. “To the caregivers too because it doesn’t affect just the person but the family.”

On Friday Oct. 8, judging will commence on businesses that decorate their buildings and shops with pink. On Saturday, Oct. 9 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. activities include the live street dance in downtown Marble Falls.

Visitors can do the cake walk, purchase items from vendor booths and watch the first responder wacky olympics as well as enjoy music from Dave Jorgenson.

Sander explained to council members how cancer has become such a prevalent concern that it has reached into the municipality’s own fire agency.

A member of the fire agency shift is a cancer survivor and another is in recovery following recent treatment.

“It’s out there. We want to show support. We started this five years ago now, and we hadn’t thought we’d be talking about members of our organization.”

Proceeds will go to nonprofit organizations Firefighter Cancer Network for agency shepherds for staff and Operation Heroes Unite to provide birthday amenities for youngsters with cancer in hospitals.
